Wait Wait....Don't Tell Me!

Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
Carl Kasell
Peter Sagal

During each fast-paced, irreverent show, host Peter Sagal leads what might be characterized as the news Olympics. Callers, panelists and guests compete by answering questions about the week's events, identifying impersonations, filling in the blanks at lightning speed, sniffing out fake news items, and deciphering limericks. Listeners vie for a chance to win the most coveted prize in radio: having official judge and scorekeeper Carl Kasell record the outgoing message on their home answering machine.

Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me! is co-produced by NPR and Chicago Public Radio.

Since Al Gore's term as the 45th vice president of the United States ended in 2001, he has starred in an Oscar-winning documentary, won a Grammy Award and received the Nobel Peace Prize. But obviously he won't be satisfied until he wins the NPR news quiz, so we've invited him to play a game called "Maybe you can beat Bill Clinton at this."

Jeff Bridges made his film debut when he was 4 months old and has been acting ever since — he has appeared in dozens of films and won an Oscar along the way, yet will always be known for his defining performance as The Dude in 1998's The Big Lebowski. He has now co-written a book drawing life lessons from the character called The Dude and the Zen Master.

Sandwich Monday: Breathable Chocolate

NPR

Originally published on Mon November 19, 2012 12:17 pm

[If you were about to note that this doesn't look like a sandwich, keep in mind the Sandwich Draft Principle applies.]

With Thanksgiving a few days away, you have to save as much stomach room as you can. That means, of course, breathing your food. To that end: Le Whif Breathable Chocolate. They're like little plastic chocolate cigarettes, filled with some kind of chocolate powder.

Ian: It's a powder. We're breathing Chocothrax!

Sandwich Monday: Hail The Pepperoni Roll

"Mini" is relative.

When I left my home state of West Virginia and went away to college, I was surprised by a couple of things. One, that the rest of the world did not refer to a ski cap as a "toboggan," and two, that the rest of the world was a dark, dystopian hellplex which had never heard of a pepperoni roll. I visited West Virginia this weekend and came back with a bag to share with my poor, naive coworkers.

Mike: Pepperoni Rolls sounds like an obese piano player from the '20s. Or maybe a sausage-powered luxury car.

Sandwich Monday: The Grilled Cheese Doughnut

The Gronut.

Celebrity couples always get our attention: Kim & Kanye, Brangelina, Gosling & Totenberg. The Grilled Cheese Doughnut is just such a pairing: Two titans together as one. We'll call it Gronut.

Take a glazed doughnut, slice it open, flip both halves around so they're cut-side out, slap on some cheese, and grill it in butter. We think Ohio's Tom & Chee Restaurant did it first, and we're guessing they did a better job than we did.

Ian: Ew. I think the proper pronunciation here is "grilled cheese DO NOT."

In January 2007, Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California was sworn in as the speaker of the House of Representatives — and became the first woman to hold that position. She is currently the House minority leader.

We've invited Pelosi to play a game about men breaking gender barriers — three questions about men who've gone where no man has gone before.
