Emergency called in three suburban New Orleans parishes

Plaquemines Parish crews hustled to the levees that protect the low-lying New Orleans suburb and St. Charles Parish closed schools through Wednesday as Tropical Storm Isaac's path moved west.

It's expected to become a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall somewhere from east of Morgan City to the Florida Panhandle.

Plaquemines, Jefferson and St. Charles parishes all have declared a state of emergency. St. Charles Parish is stocking all sandbag locations; people will need to bring their own shovels to fill bags.

Plague of lovebugs descends on Louisiana

This year's hot and humid weather could make this one of the worst lovebug seasons in years in south Louisiana, bug experts said.

Lovebugs, so called because of their tendency to fly attached to one another while mating, are a big problem for the exteriors of vehicles and structures, LSU AgCenter agent Barton Joffrion tells The Courier.

The insects' scientific name is Plecia nearctica, but they're also called march flies, lovebugs and united bugs.

Forecasters have said that Isaac could be a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes landfall over the northern Gulf Coast. That is expected to happen sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Saints register preseason win over Texans, 34-27

Matt Schaub and Drew Brees looked sharp in a high-scoring first half, and Joe Morgan's touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter lifted the New Orleans Saints to a 34-27 preseason victory over the Houston Texans on Saturday night.

Schaub completed 15-of-18 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, but three turnovers by Houston (No. 4 in the AP Pro 32) helped the Saints (No. 9) stay close despite two fumbles of their own.

Brees was 17 of 25 for 179 yards, including TD tosses to Lance Moore and Jimmy Graham.

More than 100,000 trees — including many beautiful live oaks and magnolias — were lost when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005.

In response, Hike For KaTREEna — a nonprofit group dedicated to reforesting the Crescent City — was created.

Since 2006, more than 10,000 volunteers have helped to plant 13,400 trees — including oaks, cypress, red maples, crepe myrtles, magnolias, redbuds, Savannah hollies and citrus trees such as navel orange, satsuma, lemon, lime and grapefruit.
