WWII Museum Expects 3 Millionth Visitor

The World War II Museum, which opened June 6, 2000, expects its three millionth visitor to arrive sometime Tuesday.

The museum has been experiencing record-setting attendance. Last month, it had a total of 44,807 visitors — the most ever in a one-month period — and over 1,000 more than its previous record month in March 2010.

Based on current visitor total and visitation trends, the museum will expect the three millionth visitor around midmorning.

A presentation ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. CDT.

Prosecutor seeks sanctions for Len Davis defense attorneys

Len Davis, who was sentenced to death for arranging a woman's 1994 murder, has elected to represent himself during his post-conviction proceedings. In March, however, his standby counsel filed a petition asking U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan to overturn his death sentence or order a new trial.

Louisiana Celebrates 200 Years of Statehood

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When officials from the United States arrived in newly acquired Louisiana in 1804 to consider the prospects of the area for statehood, they found a bewildering landscape that could not have been more different from the New England countryside that gave birth to the nation just a few decades earlier.

The federal group found a population made up almost entirely of French-speakers, a third of whom were free people of color.

The delegation was perplexed, according to Connie Zeanah Atkinson, professor of U.S. history at the University of New Orleans.

The renovation of New Orleans' major convention center may be delayed until the time of the 2013 Super Bowl in the city.

The center's governing board says construction costs are about $1.4 million over the initial contract price and the work is already more than a month behind schedule.

The Times-Picayune reports the projected completion date is Feb. 2 — one day before the Super Bowl and well into the weeklong series of events the center will host for the NFL.

The NFL has reserved the building for the entire week.
