You've stollen my heart at Christmas
New Orleans, LA –
Hi, this is Richard McCarthy with the WWNO Farmers Market Minute At Christmastime, we should be grateful for the Port of New Orleans. After all, it helps to bring us the world's tastes and traditions via merchant seamen. Just think of the Norwegian Seaman's Church and its culinary festivals but also farmers market vendor Captain Karl Mueller. Now retired from the helm of a ship, he directs the ovens in his coastal Mississippi operation to bake authentic German breads that are coveted by Germanic locals. Conversations at market often meander in and out of English. This time of year it is his stollen that attracts shoppers of all languages. Sprinkled with snowy powered sugar and shaped like a swaddled baby Jesus, the stollen conjures up images of a traditional German Christmas especially enjoyed when accompanied with strong coffee (and rum). For the WWNO farmers market minute, this is Richard McCarthy.
