Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, has received its first grant from the National Science Foundation. Now, a college administrator says it’s looking to fill a new position to oversee the $500,000 grant.
The funding, over three years, will support a new math program for incoming students so they can be ready for pre-calculus, according to Wiley’s Division of Sciences Dean Ruth Washington. The grant also will support the creation of two new minors in computer science and physics. Washington hopes this NSF grant will open doors to new funding sources that boost programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM.
“The team that I’m working with is very excited because they see this as a starting point for other opportunities for Wiley College to be the forerunner of undergrad STEM education, particularly in this area and maybe among historically black colleges,” Washington said.
Wiley College is set to host STEM camps for kids throughout the summer.
