Workers with the San Francisco-based car service Uber say they’re working with the city to allow the company to legally operate in New Orleans, New Orleans City Business is reporting.
Uber has had trouble trying to expand into New Orleans so far. But Uber’s New Orleans general manager Thomas Hayes said that the company is currently working to revise regulations that have kept Uber from operating in the city. Hayes told City Business that the company is optimistic about support from City Hall.
Uber’s service allows customers to hail a cab using an app on their smartphone. The service is popular in other cities where Uber has started offering services in past years.
Several changes to city code would have to be made before Uber could legally operate here. One requires black car services to charge a minimum fare and have two stretch limousines in the fleet.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu expressed support for Uber following his re-election earlier this year.
