Tense US Senate Debate Ahead Of Saturday Runoff

The final debate has been held in the race for the US Senate seat for Louisiana. Both candidates fired strong shots at each other.

Incumbent Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu is fighting to keep the seat she’s held for 18 years. And she came out swinging at her opponent. She accused Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy of padding his payroll checks for medical teaching at the LSU hospital system.

“He is going to be fighting more than President Obama if he gets elected, which I doubt," Landrieu said. "He will be fighting subpoenas because this is going to be under investigation.”

Cassidy, when pressed by moderator John Snell, dismissed the issue in this exchange:

“My boss and I have made multiple statements about this in the public. We’ve explained this…”

"Let me interrupt for just a moment, did you sign the time sheets?”

“We had signed the time sheets”

“You signed the time sheets.”

“Yah.”

Cassidy stuck to his main campaign message.

“Families are struggling and they’re struggling because of the Obama-Landrieu agenda," Cassidy said. "Obamacare is just one example. We were told we could keep our insurance if we wished and we have not been able to.”

Landrieu defended her support of the Affordable Care Act, saying it should be improved — not repealed.

“We need someone that will respect all views, go to Washington and work for the betterment of this state, on energy, on education and on health care," she said.

The runoff is Saturday.
