Sixty Second Weekend: Let Us Return To Normalcy

Hear that? The birds chirping, the construction on Esplanade, yep — New Orleans is back to normal. Jazz Fest came and went, and now it’s up to us to keep having fun. Shouldn’t be that hard:

THURSDAY, 5/9:

Room 220 Happy Hour Salon(6 p.m.) Three authors, three readings, 3 hours, free. That’s this month’s Happy Hour Salon in short. Rachel Kushner, Nathaniel Rich, and Zachary Lazar join the Press St. Scene (located at 3718 St Claude Avenue) to talk each of their new works, respectively. Kushner hails from L.A. and is traveling with her second novel, The Flamethrowers. Press Street interviews Kushner about this new work of historical fictionhere. Next up is Nathaniel Rich, a local who’s just put out a new novel, Odds Against Tomorrow, about a post-apocalyptic/hurricane-struck New York, which dances between the fears of global warming and the internet. Room 220interviewed him too. And Finally Nathan Lazar enters the frame with a novel (Sway)  a memoir (Evening’s Empires: The Story of My Father’s Murder), and his current project on the Passion Play at the Angola Prison. Who knows what he’ll talk about!

SATURDAY, 5/11:

Django (7:45 p.m.) The New Orleans Film Society continues to up the outdoor screening ante, from rooftops to sculpture gardens, to the Old U.S. Mint, but what about the world famous, textbook-taught Piazza D’Italia, found right in the heart of the CBD? If you haven’t been, this art-deco classic is a sight to behold, day or night, especially with the original 1966 Django projects on it’s walls. NOFS is co-presenting this event along with the Alliance Française de La Nouvelle-Orléans as part of the 2013 Euro-American Celebration (which runs through Sunday). BYOB(lanket), but no dollars necessary.

My Mom Says My Work Has Really Improved (6 p.m.) This art show has already happened once, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out! It’s actually round two of an exhibit that portrays connections between childhood and adulthood in art. Curator Natalie McLaurin brings together a group of local artists (including herself) at the Antennae Gallery.

SUNDAY, 5/12:

NOLA Veggie Fest (12 p.m.) A project of the Humane Society of Louisiana, this festival claims to be "spearheading the vegan revolution in New Orleans" — but (hopefully) all are welcome. After a long stint of annual fests starting back in the 90s, Katrina put a STOP sign on these veggies, until 2009 when it came back bigger and better than ever. After three years back in action as a pop-up event, Veggie Fest has found a permanent home at the New Orleans Healing Center. Come for food samples, cooking demos, speakers, a fresh produce market, and more, all being kid-friendly and for the family.

Speaking of… Happy Mother’s Day!
