Senate TV Debate Highlights Campaign Complaints

The three main candidates for Louisiana’s Senate seat squared off Tuesday night in a televised debate. The comments reflected what candidates have been saying in their ad campaigns.

Incumbent Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu repeated her complaints about the race being dominated by outside corporate funds.

“This really distorts our democracy," Landrieu said. "You can see it playing out in this exact race in Louisiana. I want to run on my record of 18 years. I’m proud of my record. It’s hard to get your voice over those bogus ads.”

Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy said Landrieu is also using money from outside donors, but from  within the Democratic party, such as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

“Mayor Mike Bloomberg is all about gun control, put about $50 million into Harry Reid's PAC, who has been attacking us," Cassidy said. "Did you notice it was five commercials to one before Labor Day and three to one after Labor Day? That was Senator Reid.”

Political newcomer Rob Maness of the Tea Party:

“Politics, from what I’ve learned in my short time in the business here, is a racket, for sure," Maness said. "There’s too much money involved. But the federal government shouldn’t get further involved by limiting out free speech.”

The election is set for November 4. If no one receives over 50 percent of the vote, a runoff will be held December 6.
