Germany's first female Minister for Labor and Social Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen, speaks at the conference, "Returning to Jobs and Growth," in Washington, D.C.

Each April, representatives from most of the world's countries gather in Washington, D.C. for the spring meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, the IMF.

Top government ministers, regional bank officials, and development aid leaders gather to discuss the current state of the global economy and solutions to the current global financial crisis.

In support of the IMF gathering, the Bertelsmann Foundation stages an annual conference on the global economy at the Newseum in Washington, along with media partner The Financial Times. Speakers from every continent offer their views, respond to challenges from colleagues, and answer questions.

This show offers highlights from the Bertelsmann conference, including ideas with from American and European leaders.

Germany's first female Minister for Labor and Social Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen, and US Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, spoke at the conference "Returning to Jobs and Growth." They offer their approach to stimulating job growth at this stage in the recovery.

The following panel is drawn from Europe, the US, and Latin America. It's titled "Learning How to Create Jobs," and it centers on experiences in both the developed and developing world.

The participants are Sergio Silva de Amaral, chairman of the Brazil-China Business council, Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce, and Margrethe Vestager, Denmark's Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of the Interior. The moderator is Geoff Dyer of The Financial Times.

Next, Anne Krueger, professor of International Economics at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Ian Bremmer, author and president of Eurasia Group, a global risk-assessment research firm, and Deven Sharma, former president of the credit rating agency, Standard and Poor, discuss how a country can create more and better jobs for its workforce, and what elements in a society need to take part in that effort and at what cost.

The final excerpt comes from the day's last panel, "Kick Starting Economic Growth." Financial and political experts from Europe, the US, and Canada tackle the difficult question of how to get the global economy growing again in a stable and beneficial fashion. Panelists include Marek Belka, President of the National Bank of Poland, Gregory Meeks, Democratic Congressman from New York's sixth district, and Jorg Asmussen, a member of the European Central Bank's executive board.
