Pop Culture Happy Hour: For Young And Old Alike

Listen to Pop Culture Happy Hour

While I'm on vacation, I'm stepping in quickly to drop this week's show, for which Stephen and I were lucky enough to be visited by two special guests in Glen and Trey's absence: our producer, Jess Gitner, and one of our mothers, Maggie Thompson. Because there were three generations of Thompsons in the building counting Stephen's very patient children, we went with a generational theme.

First, we chatted about entertainment that's suitable for all ages, ping-ponging around from music to comics to television. We rip the Band-Aid off Stephen's old angry feelings (not really) about being subjected to great culture by his monstrous (not really) parents, and hear about how Jess was lucky enough to have generational influences at a few levels.

Then, we talked about the topic of "out of print," where "print" could simply mean "availability." Maggie particularly laments the lost first season of a comedy classic, featuring a couple of very adventurous sketches, while Jess makes a pick that will very much delight old WB viewers and explains how it intersects quite surprisingly with a few "landmarks" she'd like you to know about.

As always, we close with what's making us happy this week. Stephen is happy about the Austin 100 being done, Maggie is happy about buried treasures on a tiny and obscure web site you might have heard of, Jess is happy about a game brought to her by an unlikely source, and I am happy because I am on wheels with the windows down.

Find us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter: me, Stephen, Maggie, Jess, Glen, Trey, and our esteemed producer emeritus and music director, Mike Katzif.

In time, however, her affection for writing, popular culture, and the online universe eclipsed her legal ambitions. She shoved her law degree in the back of the closet, gave its living room space to DVD sets of The Wire, and never looked back.
