Plaquemines Parish has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the eastbank of the parish, and all communities on the westbank with no levee protection. The evacuation order begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.
Additionally, a voluntary evacuation order has been called for the westbank of the parish from Ironton to Venice. The Belle Chasse Auditorium will open at 6:00 p.m. as a place of shelter, but residents are advised to bring their own provisions with them.
Residents in need of evacuation assistance are urged to contact the Plaquemines Parish Emergency Operations Center at (504) 297-5670.
"We are fully prepared for a heavy rain event," Parish President Billy Nungesser said in a press release issued by the parish. "All pump stations are operational and we have crews on stand-by."
Nungesser declared a state of emergency for Plaquemines Parish at 3:00 p.m. Thursday. The parish has canceled all of their Recreation Department games for this weekend.
Parish officials do not expect the Army Corps of Engineers to close the Highway 23 floodgate at Oakville, or the Highway 39 floodgate at the St. Bernard/Plaquemines Parish line.
