A Hot Springs, Arkansas, still life artist who builds origami dragon scenes as the basis for his paintings will give an artist workshop Monday at the Bossier Arts Council Annex in Bossier City.
Bastrop, La.-native Daniel Mark Cassity will show other artists how he accomplishes his glazing technique. Cassity says it’s a long, slow process that requires immense patience.
“You’re layering one semitransparent color over another. You build up the image slowly that way letting what is underneath peak through what is freshly on top, and it’s a cumulative effect,” Cassity said.
Cassity has five of his paintings hung in an American still life exhibition on display at the R.W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport. It runs through August.
Over the past few years, Cassity believes he’s found his “inner muse,” a theme that will forever inspire his artwork and create the foundation for his art’s identity. He says he’s happy to be known as the "origami dragon guy."
“From the artist’s perspective, one of the most difficult things is to find a style -- a technical approach -- that is instantly recognizable. In other words, someone can view an image and it will click that oh, that’s so in so without reading the name. That’s what you want. It’s not easy to do,” Cassity said.
Cassity relocated from Shreveport to Hot Springs less than a year ago to be part of its bustling art community. His demonstration for the Creative Arts Connection program begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Bossier Arts Council Annex.
