The Coast Guard says an oil sheen in the Gulf of Mexico matches oil from the BP spill two years ago. The exact source is unclear.
The Coast Guard says samples taken from the sheen last month connect it to the spill. But the source could be the sunken drilling rig, or debris remaining on the seafloor from containment operations.
The Coast Guard says BP and rig owner Transocean are on notice that either or both companies could be responsible for assessment and cleanup. It says the sheen can’t be recovered and doesn’t threaten the shoreline.
The Justice Department is continuing negotiations with BP on a settlement for damages caused by its blown-out well.
