Northwestern State University’s art department is organizing its first 45-second video art show. The video submissions must be 45 seconds or less, and the competition is open to anyone 18 or older. NSU instructor Corbin Covher collaborated with his colleagues in an effort to bring more video art to the region.
“A lot of video work becomes abstract and artistic, and it’s not something that they’re used to. They’re used to video work being movies and show format, not necessarily an artistic expression,” Covher said.
NSU art historian Phyllis Lear will be the juror of the competition. Art department coordinator Matt DeFord says he doesn’t know how many videos will be entered, but he hopes that 45 seconds will entice people to upload their effort to the video-sharing website Vimeo.
“People can just try. They can just try video. They can try it on their phone. There are all sorts of editing apps that they can get for their device. So anybody can really do it,” DeFord said.
Entries are due Oct. 22 and a screening is planned for Nov. 19.
