New Orleans Saints Drop To 0-2, Lose In Cleveland 26-24

The New Orleans Saints suffered another disappointing loss on Sunday, this time in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Browns have bested the Saints in five of their past six matchups. On Sunday the Saints were done in by another late field goal, this time a 29-yarder with three seconds to play in regulation. The final score: 26 to 24.

One highlight: Quarterback Drew Brees passed John Elway, moving into fourth place on the NFL’s all-time list for passing yards.

But Brees was sacked twice — once nearly for a Browns safety — picked off once for a 62-yard touchdown return, and hurried time and again.

The Saints and Browns defensive numbers looked pretty similar on paper, but the Cleveland secondary definitely held the edge and momentum for much of the game. Frustrations boiled over on the sideline between head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Fans even took to Change.org to pile on Saints cornerback Patrick Robinson — there are scores of signatures on a petition demanding he be cut from the roster.

In Baton Rouge, LSU has notched back-to-back shutouts in Tiger Stadium for the first time in 73 years with a 31-0 win over UL-Monroe. The Tigers have jumped to number 8 in the AP poll, and will face undefeated Mississippi State on Saturday.

Elsewhere around the state, Tulane won their first home game since moving into a new campus stadium — and UL-Lafayette was blown out again, this time a 56-15 loss to Ole Miss.

By the numbers:

Paid attendance at Cleveland’s FirstEnergy Stadium: 67,407

Mark Ingram: 83 rushing yards on 11 attempts, and 21 yards receiving.

Jimmy Graham: 10 receptions for 118 yards.

Browns 2-2 on 4th down conversions. Saints 7-13-54% on third downs.
