New Orleans Officials Backing Ballot Measures

Business and community leaders joined New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in endorsing three ballot measures on the November 4 ballot. The initiatives will affect city financing for the future.

Mayor Landrieu is urging voters to approve three ballot measures. Constitutional Amendment 6 would raise the millage on police and fire protection.

The Law Enforcement District Proposition would allow taxes dedicated for jail building projects to be used to fund operations under the consent decree.

A city charter amendment would formalize a process to support disadvantaged businesses and minorities getting a fair share of city contracts.

“Think about what you want for our city. We need more flexibility for more funding for police and fire so we can hire more police officers," he said. "We need a creative solution to fund a constitutional jail without raising taxes or cutting services. We need fair and open city contracting. That’s why I’m voting yes on November 4th.”

Landrieu says none of the measures is a tax increase. He says they just give officials that option if it’s needed.

Voters are facing a lengthy ballot in this election, and Landrieu says hopes they take the time to decide the ballot measures along with candidates.
