Mayor's 2015 Budget Proposes More Police Officers

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has presented a budget that includes a 5 percent pay raise for police – the first in eight years.

Landrieu says the city is collecting more money that’s owed, and attracting more retail business – so revenue is up.

The mayor has held community meetings to establish budget priorities throughout the city on how that money should be spent.

He says public safety remains the top concern.

Included in the $537 million budget is money for 150 new police recruits, 100 new police cars and more body cameras for officers. There is also money to fully fund the consent decree designed to reform the police department.

Also included in the budget is funding for road and streetlight repairs, raising the minimum wage for city workers to $10.10 an hour, recreation programs and blight removal.

The budget will now be reviewed by the City Council.
