Loyola University Prepares for Tropical Storm Isaac

Loyola University has determined that they will not evacuate their campus, but will be canceling classes and suspending normal operations through Wednesday.

The full text of Loyola's press release:

It has been determined that Tropical Storm Isaac may affect the New Orleans area, but is not believed to be of sufficient strength to warrant evacuation at this time. As a precautionary measure, Loyola University New Orleans is cancelling classes and suspending normal operations beginning today at 12:30 p.m. through Wednesday, August 29, to allow faculty, staff and students adequate time to make their personal preparations. Students who wish to leave the city or those who have already left due to the impending inclement weather will receive no academic penalty. All Loyola departments should enact their respective emergency preparedness plans by the close of business on Monday.
Loyola’s emergency action strategy for Tropical Storm Isaac is to shelter-in-place all students who reside on campus. All students who reside off-campus should review their personal emergency plans and decide where they will remain during the storm. While a mandatory evacuation has not been called for the city, if you do indeed plan to leave the city, you should do so within the next 12 hours before travel becomes more difficult or restricted.
We strongly recommend that everyone revisit your personal and family preparedness plans (and communication plans) to ensure you and your loved ones are ready to react should the situation arise. A few suggested courses of action relating to preparedness and safety are as follows:
• Tie down loose items outside your home • Make sure you have flashlights (and batteries) • Stay tuned to local weather or NWS/NOAA • Ensure you have 3 days of food, supplies, and medicines • Take pets with you if you evacuate • Don’t proceed into standing water • Be cognizant of where you park your vehicle, as flash flooding can occur quickly • Visit these links for more information on individual preparedness: - GOHSEP (http://www.getagameplan.org/) - American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/prepare) Loyola’s Emergency Management Team will continue to keep you informed of any new developments and ask that you stay tuned for further information from the university, the city of New Orleans and local news sources. Regularly monitor the university’s website (www.loyno.edu) and the university’s information hotline (504-865-2186) or (toll free, 1-888-94LOYNO) for all official university information.
