Loyola Ballet Celebrates Centennial With Classic And Contemporary Works

Loyola University

The Loyola Ballet launches its new season with a mixed repertory concert featuring excerpts from Yuri Grigorovich’s acclaimed Russian ballet, “The Stone Flower,” Nov. 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. Directed by Laura Zambrano, the performance will take place in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex, on Loyola University's main campus.

Set to composer Sergei Prokofiev’s final work in a series of Soviet-era ballets, “The Stone Flower” is based on the Russian fairytale of the same name and is a mixture of classical dance and folk choreography. Danila, a stone carver, attempts to create more perfect art for his true love, Katerina. During his quest, Danila is led to the underground realm of the Queen of the Copper Mountain, whose efforts to help him are overwrought by her own desires to hold him captive. True love eventually conquers all and the queen releases Danila so he can return to the village with Katerina.

Other works on the program include the “Rose Adagio” from Marius Petipa’s “Sleeping Beauty,” restaged by Zambrano and set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; a contemporary work set to music by Thelonious Monk and choreographed by Loyola senior Magdalena King; and “Dances of Szatmar,” a Hungarian work performed by guest artists Komenka Ethnic Dance Ensemble, directed by John Rodi, Daniel Gianfala and Cheryl O’Sullivan.

The program concludes with “Rhythm: A Tribute to George Gershwin,” performed to an orchestrated version of Gershwin’s “I’ve Got Rhythm” and choreographed by Gayle Parmelee.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for all students, seniors, children and Loyola faculty and staff, and are available online at http://www.montage.loyno.edu or by calling (504) 865-2074. Tickets will also be available at the door 30 minutes prior to the performance. Free parking is available in the West Road Garage, accessible from St. Charles Avenue.
