Louisiana Department Of Education Releases School Report Cards

The Louisiana Department of Education released school report cards on Tuesday. School letter grades across the state mostly held steady.

State Superintendent John White said this year's scores show steady, modest gains in student achievement. More schools earned an A this year, and most schools in the B through D range held steady.

Schools were graded on a curve this year, as the state transitions to higher academic standards. White says the curve only affected 21 schools out of more than 1,300.

School districts receive letter grades, too. In New Orleans, the Orleans Parish School board received and A and the Recovery School District got a C – the same grades as last year. OPSB includes 20 schools; RSD oversees 59.

The first school report cards were released in 2011. Elementary school grades are based solely on standardized test scores. Middle school grades factor in how many students continue onto high school. And high school grades take ACT scores and graduation rates into account.

There's a lot riding on these letter grades. NOLA.com reports that a third of New Orleans charter schools are up for renewal this fall. Their scores will largely determine whether or not they continue to operate.
