New Orleans, LA –

Hi, this is Richard McCarthy with the WWNO Farmers Market Minute We stand on the shoulders of giants. This morning at the Crescent City Farmers Market, we celebrated the Market's 15th birthday. While markets have been around for six-thousand years, it took a small team of enthusiasts to reinvent and spread farmers markets in our region. Today, a new wooden market token was unveiled. Each year the coin features a different culinary hero. 2010 pays tribute to a visionary: cooking school entrepreneur, chef, and author Lee Barnes. In the 1970s, she recognized the need to teach culinary skills that were beginning to fade. In the age of ascending fast food, she was ahead of her time. She tragically died aged 41 in 1992. Without her, today's markets wouldn't be here. Look for Lee Barnes' smiling face next time you purchase tokens. For the WWNO farmers market minute, this is Richard McCarthy.
