Katrina Memorial Events Set To Mark Ninth Anniversary

Several events are planned in New Orleans to mark the ninth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro will join city leaders at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Katrina memorial in Charity Hospital Cemetery on Canal Street.

Friday marks nine years since the August 29th, 2005, storm hit. It's blamed for more than 1,800 deaths.

In New Orleans, federal levee failures unleashed catastrophic flooding, destruction and damage were widespread.

The city continues to recover.

The Data Center says Census figures show New Orleans with an estimated population of 378,000.

That’s about 78 percent of its 2000 population of 484,000.
