Isaac hits Terrebonne, flattens cane crops

Terrebonne Parish, southwest of New Orleans, was at the eye of slow-moving Tropical Storm Isaac.

Signs of the storm were everywhere: power outages, downed branches and flattened fields of sugar cane. Some fields look as though a tank drove over them.

LSU AgCenter sugarcane specialist Kenneth Gravois says growers got an early start on planting, but they've since been slowed by wet weather. Isaac is expected to slow them down even more with several more inches of rain on already saturated fields.

Gravois says they usually wait a week or so after a storm to allow the cane to straighten itself back up before they'll know the full extent of any damage.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter says an elderly couple whose gas line ruptured had to be rescued.
