The VieuxCarré Commission is allowing a controversial restaurant proposed for the French Quarter to move forward. But there are still roadblocks.
Restaurant owner Sean Meenan has gotten permission to present final documents to the commission’s architectural review committee. He’s been fighting for the past year to get the okay for a two-story Cuban restaurant called Habana Outpost, at Esplanade Avenue and North Rampart Street.
He operates two similar restaurants in New York and one in California.
Opponents of Habana Outpost say it’s too big compared to other French Quarter businesses. Meenan wants to use three lots.
Several speakers urged the commission to approve the project they say will improve the city's economy and help make the run-down corner safer.
Meenan was told that if he makes no major changes to the plan, the commission will likely approve it next month.
