Gustavo Santaolalla Hearts NPR

Gustavo Santaolalla might be best known for his Oscar-winning scores. He's taken home golden statues for both Brokeback Mountain and Babel. But Santaolalla is also a pioneer of Latin rock, with his Argentinean band Arco Iris.

He did a guest DJ set for NPR's Latin music program Alt. Latino, playing some of his own tracks, music he's produced and some of his favorites by other artists. Between songs, Santaolalla told Alt.Latino Hosts Felix Contreras and Jasmine Garsd about getting his first guitar, a gift from his grandmother at age 5, and all the music his parents exposed him to as a kid.

Stream the interview to hear him talk about his long career, getting arrested frequently in Argentina as a young musician with long hair, and the evolution of Latin music. On his way out, Santaolalla paused to show us a little amor.
