New Orleans, La. – Members of the Vieux Carre Commission are asking city officials to make sure pedicabs are carefully regulated. They had a list of complaints about the operation of mule-drawn carriages; many about the animal waste that's left on the streets. Deputy Director Malachi Hull of the ground transportation division promised a strong oversight. The city is starting a trial program for 45 pedicabs to operate citywide. Most are expected to pedal passengers around the French Quarter and Central Business District. The program could run two years, with a full review after one year. A lottery is planned next month to select operators. The commission voted to request Hull keep officials up to date on getting pedicab service operating.
