A federal judge has blocked a restrictive abortion law from taking effect in Louisiana. At issue is the requirement that doctors providing abortions to have admitting privileges at area hospitals.
A restraining order now blocks the law requiring doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of their clinics.
Doctors involved in the case have applied for those privileges and are waiting for a decision. Attorneys for the clinics claim doctors didn’t have enough time to comply with the state regulation.
Louisiana lawmakers approved the hospital-admission requirement, saying it would help women who have complications from an abortion. Opponents say it’s not medically necessary and would likely close the five clinics in Louisiana that provide abortions.
