A meeting is planned tomorrow night to review progress New Orleans police are making in domestic violence and sexual assault investigations. Time will be set aside to help people who may need those services.
The meeting was called by New Orleans City Council President Jason Williams. He says he’s concerned about a recent increase in reported sexual assaults. And he wants to check progress police are making in coordinating with victim services
“This is about making sure that victims are aware of all the resources that are there, and to make them aware of what changes have been made to do the job better," Williams said. "But you’re going to hear – you’re going to certainly hear – some complains. I think that’s part of it. That’s how we improve the process.”
Wiliams says there will be time at the end of the meeting for people to meet with members of the New Orleans Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and the New Orleans Family Justice Center's Sexual Assault Response Team.
“Want to make sure that if there’s someone that has been a victim – or a family member victim – that they are able to use the resources that will be present to help them in that space they’re in now," he said. "So we’re hoping to really do more than just talk.”
It’s scheduled to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Holy Angels Convent on St. Claude Avenue.
