Disability Activist Jonah Bascle Dies At 28

Disability advocate, mayoral candidate and comedian Jonah Bascle has died.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that Bascle died of heart failure on Tuesday.

He was 28.

Bascle made headlines in 2010 when he ran for New Orleans mayor. He joked that he lost in a close race — by more than 68,000 votes.

Bascle lead a drive to make the St. Charles streetcars wheelchair accessible. The historic landmark is exempt from the Americans with Disabilities Act and remains inaccessible.

He was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when he was 12 years old.

He often appeared at open mic night at La Nuit Theater on Freret Street, performing there two months ago.

Funeral services are pending.
