New Orleans, La. – Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says oil companies have been kept informed of new drilling requirements as they developed. A ban was imposed shortly after the Deepwater Horizon explosion in April triggered a massive spill from BP's well.
"These deepwater rigs will have a very clear understanding of what is expected of them. So I expect we will see a resumption of deepwater drilling very soon."
Permits are controlled by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Director Michael Bromwich says drilling could resume within months.
