Convoys set to flooded lower Plaquemines

Business owners and residents who evacuated from the west river bank of flooded south Plaquemines Parish will be allowed to return temporarily with police escorts on Monday.

Parish President Billy Nungesser says the convoys will let people retrieve valuables and maybe find pets left behind when Hurricane Isaac hit.

Convoys into the southern end of the parish will run from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.; convoys out will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Nungesser said that in between, repair work will be done on a damaged Mississippi River levee.

Nungesser said Sunday afternoon that around five feet of water still covered lower Plaquemines communities including Braithwaite and Myrtle Grove.

Controlled breaches of one overtopped levee and additional pumps are being used to get rid of the water.
