This week on Continuum you'll hear two very different performances of the earliest known song cycle, Cantigas de Amigo, by the mid 13th century composer Martin Codax.
These seven songs of love for a friend express the feelings of a young girl waiting for her boyfriend to return from the Sea of Vigo, off the northwest coast of the Iberian peninsular, not far from Santiago de Compostela. Performances are by two important early music ensembles. Recordings used are: Cantigas de Amigo (Ensemble Alcatraz) - Dorian DOR 90285 (Paul Hillier with Andrew Lawrence-King) - Lyrichord LEMS 8022.
