Congressmen sign up for races as qualifying opens

All of Louisiana's incumbent congressmen signed up for their re-election bids on the opening day of qualifying.

The most heated congressional race is expected between two Republican incumbents forced into the same district. Reps. Charles Boustany of Lafayette and Jeff Landry of New Iberia are battling for a reconfigured 3rd District because Louisiana's population didn't grow enough to hold on to seven congressional seats.

Candidates must file paperwork and pay their fees by Friday if they want to run in the Nov. 6 election.

Other U.S. House members qualifying Wednesday were Republican Reps. Steve Scalise of Metairie, John Fleming of Minden, Rodney Alexander of Quitman and Bill Cassidy of Baton Rouge; and Democratic Rep. Cedric Richmond of New Orleans. All but two attracted opposition, but from little-known challengers.
