Republican Congressman Steve Scalise of Jefferson is seeking the number three leadership position in the House majority reorganization.
The New Orleans Advocate reports Scalise will be running for the post of House majority whip.
It comes as Republicans handle the fall-out of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor losing his Virginia seat to tea party candidate David Brat.
Scalise has served in the House since 2008. He’s facing opposition for the whip job from an Ohio congressman.
The whip is responsible for wrangling votes along the party line. It comes after House speaker and majority leader.
Leadership elections are set for June 19.
