A young Brooklyn boy's coming-of-age in the late 1930's is the setting for "Brighton Beach Memoirs". The School of Performing Arts at Louisiana Tech University presents the Neil Simon play beginning this week.
"Eugene is a 15 year old kid who doesn't know if he wants to play pro baseball or become a writer," says the play's director, Dr. Kenneth Robbins. "He's in the process of maturing as a man, and doesn't quite know how to handle the change of feelings and emotions he has."
He confides in his brother, Stanley, about dealing with the pains and problems of growing up in a crowded household. A widowed aunt and her daughters have come to live with Eugene's family. The comedy unfolds as internal issues and life's challenges are shared as opportunities and obstacles are met by the show's characters.
"Brighton Beach Memoirs" opens Wednesday at Stone Theatre on the Louisiana Tech campus.
