BP Could Still Settle Civil Case

Testimony continues in week two of the BP oil spill trial in federal court. But one legal expert says the case could still reach a settlement.

BP maintains that it had tried to settle, but some claims were unreasonable. Law professor Carl Tobias of the University of Richmond says it’s possible the oil company is still in settlement talks as the trial proceeds.

“There is hope that there ultimately would be a settlement. And sometimes you just want to put the other side to its proof and see what kind of case the other side can make. But, again, this publicity may well be very damaging for the reputation of the company. And so at some point it may just become too great.”

BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley told an industry conference Wednesday in Houston that the company would defend itself in court, but refused to take questions about a possible settlement. He says BP is currently working on seven deepwater rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
