30 Under 30: Kickball

I’m breaking the cardinal rule of this column, which aims to direct the under-30 crowd to experiences that’ll cost them less than $30, by encouraging something that may cost nearly double that.

Kickball! Everyone join a kickball league! I’m telling you it’s worth it.

Ever since college, I’ve realized a few things about myself: 1) that I enjoy the occasional libation, and 2) I miss team sports and the quasi-competitiveness that comes from them.

That’s why I will be signing up for a league to reign in the New Year.

Former NCAA-athletes and perpetual gym class-skippers alike rave about the amount of fun and the amount of booze that these leagues enable. Since most of them are starting up again in January, here are some of your options for registration:

WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association) has leagues all over the country, but six here in New Orleans. Their registration fee is about $69, the highest for all the leagues I’ve surveyed, but their season lasts longer than most (around 10 weeks). The new season starts on January 3 of next year.

New Orleans also has it’s own local leagues through PlayNOLA and Kickball of the Crescent City (KOCC). PlayNOLA’s season starts 1/23/13 and registration is $62.

Kickball365, another national association, is launching their inaugural New Orleans season this January. Their fee is $45 per player/free agent.

No matter which league you choose, you can expect the following awesome things: t-shirts, umpires, food and drink specials at local bars, prizes for winning teams, etc.

And don’t forget the after-party! There is always an after-party. I hear the competition spills over into the bar, usually in the form of flip-cup tournaments. I can’t wait.

Batter (kicker?) up.
