Spoiler Alert

Originally published on Wed November 6, 2013 2:47 pm

With the Internet, it can be hard to avoid people talking about key plot points of movies or TV programs that you haven't seen yet. "It's a sled! She's a man! The Red Wedding is not a happy occasion!" See? In this game, we're going to spoil some movies by asking you to identify them based on the very last lines spoken in the film. (Though as you'll see, the last lines of most films are quite vague and spoiler-free.)

Just Like Van Gogh, Ocean Waves Paint Clouds In The Sky

YouTube

Originally published on Fri July 19, 2013 10:40 am

If you can't get to a beach this weekend, you can still see waves. Just look up.

Clouds, after all, are sculpted by waves of air. These clouds, in Birmingham, Ala., were formed when two layers of air — one fast, the other slow — collided at just the right speed to create rises and dips that caused the clouds to curl in on themselves and crash, just like waves on a beach.

Pop Culture Happy Hour: 'The New Black' And Secret Names

NPR

  • Listen to Pop Culture Happy Hour

With host Linda Holmes taking the week off to focus on suffering and nose-blowing, we needed only to ask our beloved producer Jess Gitner into the room with us to complete a full Pop Culture Happy Hour lineup. (In historic Studio 44, Jess is usually sealed in an adjacent room, where she watches us through glass the way one might observe a cage of unruly chimps at the zoo.)

It would have been easy for Radiation City to make a retread of its 2011 debut, The Hands That Take You. Moody and hazy, yet easy to like, it was that record which introduced Radiation City to Portland and beyond, helping it score Willamette Week's "Best New Band" honor along the way.

In Indonesia, A Genocide Restaged For The Camera

The opening of The Act of Killing, which seems like something out of a Bollywood musical, has a happy energy about it. But as we'll learn, the two men in the center led death squads in the 1960s, when an estimated 1.2 million Indonesians were killed. In Joshua Oppenheimer's astonishing documentary, they obligingly re-enact their crimes.

"Genocide in Indonesia." Those words probably don't make you want to rush out to see a new movie.

But what if we add these: Genocide in Indonesia, with gangsters, cowboys, dancing girls, men in drag and splashy musical numbers. They're all part of the year's strangest documentary, The Act of Killing.

As a blaze that's already burned more than 23,000 acres draws within about two miles of Palm Springs, Calif., officials are saying it's atop the U.S. Forest Service's list of wildfires that need to be fought.

"We are the national priority right now," U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Jeanne Pincha-Tulley told reporters Thursday.
