Crime in New Orleans dropped nearly eight percent in the last quarter of 2012, and by one percent for the year overall, according to numbers released today by the New Orleans Police Department.

Murders and rapes dropped by 18 percent in the last quarter of 2012, armed robberies by 32 percent, auto theft by nearly 34 percent, burglaries by more than 13 percent, and simple robberies by more than two percent. however, instances of assault were up 16 percent, and thefts were up more than four percent.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Cosimo Matassa, the recording producer whose New Orleans studio was where Fats Domino recorded his first album "The Fat Man" in 1949, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Matassa was honored over the weekend in Cleveland for his contributions to the evolution of rock and roll.

Other 2012 Hall of Fame inductees included the Beastie Boys, Guns 'n' Roses, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chicago blues guitarist Freddie King.

There’s a reason why. In the past year, New Orleans parking officials have become much more aggressive in the use of devices that immobilize cars with outstanding parking tickets.

“[W]e used to boot vehicles if they had more than three violations,” said city Department of Public Works parking administrator Zepporiah Edmonds, in testimony Wednesday afternoon before the City Council’s Budget-Audit Board of Review.

A drawn-out battle over the right to gate a public street reached a milestone Tuesday when a Civil Court judge ruled in favor of keeping Newcomb Boulevard open.

Residents of Newcomb Boulevard, a ritzy Uptown neighborhood parallel to even ritzier Audubon Place, in 2006 got the go-ahead from the city’s Department of Public Works to block the Freret Street end of the block that runs to St. Charles Avenue.

New Orleans Police have placed a Tremé woman under arrest this evening for the second-degree murder of her estranged boyfriend.

Police say 31-year-old Monica Pollard fatally stabbed her boyfriend at around 1:50 p.m. this afternoon, during an argument inside her house in the 2200 block of Orleans Avenue. The victim made his way outside, collapsed, and was taken to a local hospital where he died.

New Orleans officials are giving high marks for the city’s performance in this year’s Mardi Gras. Work is already starting on making sure next year’s carnival season goes well, even with a Super Bowl in the middle of the party.
