Pelicans' Anthony Davis Returns From Injury, Leads 88-85 Win Over Detroit Pistons

What shoulder injury?

Anthony Davis, the New Orleans Pelicans’ seemingly unstoppable phenom who puts the power in power forward, returned to the floor of the Smoothie King Center on Wednesday night and put the visiting Detroit Pistons away with 39 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocks.

Davis had missed the previous five games with an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder (defined as an injury to the connective tissue between the clavicle and shoulder blade), suffered during a collision with Miami’s Hassan Whiteside on Feb. 21.

There are a lot of amazing things that happen on the court at a New Orleans Pelicans game.

Like pretty much anything All-Star power forward Anthony Davis does. Halfway through the season Davis is a clear candidate for NBA MVP, a man who seems more suited to a video game than a real-life basketball team.

The New Orleans Pelicans score 115 points, snap Atlanta’s 19-game win streak

The New Orleans Pelicans pulled off an improbable and intensely entertaining 115-100 beatdown of the Atlanta Hawks Monday night at the Smoothie King Center.

Atlanta, who had come into the game on a 19-game winning streak (the 5th-longest in NBA history), seemed out of sorts from the midpoint of the first quarter, missing easy shots and struggling to contain an energized Pelicans team.

The New Orleans Pelicans unveiled a new ad campaign on Tuesday, riffing on the hilarious, iconic Frankie & Johnny’s “Special Man” commercials from the 1980s.

The commercial — starring Ryan Anderson, Tyreke Evans, and Anthony Davis — is promoting a new three-game discounted ticket plan. Fans can purchase three-game packages of tickets to any game for $24 a seat.

Davis fills the role of the eponymous, cigar-smoking Special Man, originally played by Lester Love, Sr., a salesman at the furniture store who passed away in 2001.

Pelicans trade Austin Rivers and Russ Smith, acquire Quincy Pondexter and a draft pick

The New Orleans Pelicans have completed a three-team trade that has been in the works all this weekend, sending Austin Rivers to the Boston Celtics and Russ Smith to the Memphis Grizzlies.

In return, New Orleans has received forward Quincy Pondexter and a future second-round draft pick from the Grizzlies.

Pondexter started his career in New Orleans, appearing in 66 games during the 2010-11 season. That year the then-Hornets went 46-36 and made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the first round in six games by the Los Angeles Lakers.

New Orleans weekend sports recap: Saints finish season with a win, Pelicans split home and away

The woeful Buccaneers looked like they were going to beat the Saints on Sunday. But New Orleans came back to take the lead with just under two minutes to play. Junior Galette added a sack for a safety to seal the deal.

New Orleans finished the season with a four-game winning streak on the road.

The Saints’ 7-9 record tied their other two lows in the Sean Payton era: 2007, and 2012 — the Bountygate year.

Louisiana Tech won the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Friday.

Portland Trail Blazers Burn New Orleans Pelicans, 114-88

Looking for Santa? Sorry.

The Portland Trail Blazers didn’t look like a team who had played a triple-overtime game the night before.

The Blazers played a three-hour-seven-minute contest in San Antonio, got on a plane, came into the Smoothie King Center, and trounced the New Orleans Pelicans, 114-88.

Pelicans players missed layups. They missed jump shots. They missed slam dunks. They missed free throws. They gave Portland every fast break, slow break, medium break…

The Pelicans just looked broke.
