From Hornets to Pelicans: Animal Behavior Experts on New Orleans' New NBA Mascot

The Hornets have played their last game under that team name. Next season they become the Pelicans. The change is meant to tie the team more closely to New Orleans, but it also means the team has a whole new brand, and a new feel to it.

WWNO’s Eve Troeh sat down with two animal experts to take a literal approach to the change from Hornets to Pelicans. Carolyn Atherton is assistant curator of birds at Audubon Zoo. Zach Lemann directs programs at the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium.

Hugo The Hornet's Last Game

Hugo, the New Orleans Hornets' iconic mascot, worked his last game Sunday evening. The team will become the Pelicans after Wednesday night's contest in Dallas, which means there isn't much room for a giant teal Hornet anymore.

It's the end of a long road for Hugo. Designed by Cheryl Henson, the daughter of Muppet creator Jim Henson, Hugo entered the league in 1988, his rookie season coinciding with the inaugural year of the Charlotte Hornets franchise, the team's original home.

Hornets Lose Final Home Game To Mavericks, 107-89

The New Orleans Hornets lost to the Dallas Mavericks 107-89 Sunday afternoon in their final home game before becoming the Pelicans. The Mavericks rolled over the Hornets’ defense, shooting 52.3% from the field, and 42.9% from three-point range.

The Hornets lost the lead early in the first quarter as Dallas relentlessly attacked the paint. The Mavs outscored the Bees 18-8 under the rim in the first quarter, and extended their lead to 33-19 before the end of the period.

Hornets Battle To End But Fall To Clippers, 96-93

The New Orleans Hornets lost to the Los Angeles Clippers Friday night at the New Orleans Arena, 96-93. The Hornets led by 10 points with 8:31 left in the game, but lost control of the game.

Injured Anthony Davis Will Miss Remainder Of Season

New Orleans Hornets rookie forward Anthony Davis will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered during the April 10 game against the Sacramento Kings, the team reported yesterday.

Davis suffered a sprained Medial Collateral Ligament and bone bruise in his left knee after colliding with Sacramento guard Marcus Thornton with 5:45 to play in the game. He underwent an MRI yesterday, which revealed no additional structural damage.
