It’s easy to portray food trucks as the renegades of the culinary world. Modern, highly mobile and very much in vogue, they play by different rules than brick-and-mortar restaurants. But around New Orleans lately, these food trucks are increasingly enlisted to serve a number of community causes alongside their street food.

When it comes to finding a food truck in New Orleans, social media is usually the preferred method. But lately just checking local event listings has been a pretty reliable tool, too.


It’s a holiday weekend, with a lot of opportunities to party — hopefully this three- (or four-, or five-) day vacation won’t go from being a long weekend to a lost weekend… So here are some things to keep you on your feet:

On this week's Louisiana Eats! New Orleans' councilwoman Stacy Head and Rachel Billow of the New Orleans Food Truck Coalition draft new food truck ordinances in New Orleans' political system.

We'll hear how the laws are outdated, find out why an approved ordinance was vetoed, and discuss plans for the future. Then, Greg Reggio joins us to talk about his involvement with the Taste Buds, a culinary and restaurant development company based in Louisiana. Plus, Jyl Benson and Ryan Hughes discuss great places to eat and unexpected ingredients to use in your kitchen.

With nearly 700 food carts licensed last year, Portland, Ore., is arguable a leader in the mobile food revolution. Lucky residents can choose between Iraqi-Jewish sabich, yeasted Belgian liege waffles, or Indonesian rendang, all served out of a friendly window on the sidewalk. But all of these mobile meals come with a downside — namely, trash.
