Then, we explore the connections between New Orleans and Ireland as the city hosts the International Irish Famine Commemoration with a bevy of cultural events.

And, we round out with an exhibit that highlights home, place and architecture as RHINO Contemporary Crafts Gallery presents Location, Location, Location.

This week on Inside the Arts, we visit with Daniel Weilbaecher, artistic director of the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans. Weilbaecher is this year's recipient of the Big Easy Classical Arts Lifetime Achievement Award.

Then we travel to the Northshore as the internationally-acclaimed Koresh Dance Company gears up for an energetic performance in Hammond.

And, we'll meet a group of students who recently auditioned for some prominent local jazz musicians.

And finally, the New Orleans Ballet Association brings together a unique group of dancers in its annual production of The Nutcracker Suite.

Chitresh Das Dance Company

Some people might think putting an Indian Classical dancer and a New York-born tap star together would never work. On this week's Notes from New Orleans, we'll hear from Chitresh Das, a master of the ancient Kat-tuck dance style, and tap star Jason Samuels Smith. They'll burn up the stage in an East-meets-West dance event brought to the city by the New Orleans Ballet Association and the NOCCA Institute. 


Diogo de Lima is a Brazilian choreographer and Professor of Dance on the faculty of Tulane University.

On this week's Notes from New Orleans, Sharon Litwin talks with him about his newly-commissioned work that features live music by John Boutté, to be performed in this week's "New Dance Festival" at the Marigny Opera House.

Dana Reed’s career as a dancer has taken her across the country. While studying dance education at the University of Southern Mississippi, she spent her summers at the nationally renowned Bates Dance Festival in Lewiston, Maine. There she met dancer and activist Jane Weiner, who introduced her to the concept of community arts programs.

Jessica Lang, one of the most sought-after choreographers in the country is heading to New Orleans. We go Inside the Arts for a sneak peek at Jessica Lang Dance, a dynamic ballet company that promises an engaging evening of dance.


The New Orleans Hornets are holding auditions in Westwego, Baton Rouge and Biloxi, Miss., to pick members of next season's Honeybees dance squad.

Auditions at the Alario Center in Westwego start Saturday morning. The Baton Rouge auditions are Sunday afternoon at Tari's School of Dance. The Biloxi auditions were held Thursday.

Roughly 40 finalists will be picked from the three auditions to compete July 22 for spots on the squad. Only those final auditions will be open to the public.
