Washington Parish to open emergency shelters in advance of Isaac

Washington Parish President Richard Thomas has asked the Red Cross to assist in opening shelters in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac's landfall, the parish said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

Shelters will open at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, the parish said, and remain open until the inclement weather subsides.

The shelters are safe havens only, the parish said, and do not have backup electricity. Residents are urged to bring necessities such as bedding, toiletries and medications with them.

Washington Parish is making sandbag locations available to residents starting at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. The locations are:

Isaac leads airlines to cancel New Orleans flights

Several airlines are cancelling all of their New Orleans flights in anticipation of hurricane winds and rain from Isaac.

American Airlines, Southwest and United are all suspending operations in the city. The move comes after large cancelations in Southern Florida Sunday due to Tropical Storm Isaac.

The storm is over the Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to grow into a Category 1 hurricane and hit land late Tuesday night. A Category 1 hurricane has winds ranging from 74 mph to 95 mph.

Airport to cease operation at end of day

The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport will cease operation at the end of today, and remain closed until at least Wednesday, officials said in a press release.

No flights are scheduled for Tuesday, August 28.

Airport officials also reiterated that the facility is not an evacuation shelter, and people will not be permitted to remain in the terminal during the storm. Parking garages are also restricted to ticketed passengers only, and travelers should be prepared to show a printed boarding pass or itinerary in order to enter Airport property.

Louisiana utility companies ready for Isaac's blow

Utility crews are surveying the power lines and thousands of utility workers from other states are on standby, as Louisiana power companies readied for Tropical Storm Isaac.

Fresh in minds around the state's capital city was Hurricane Gustav, which struck as a Category 2 storm in 2008 — and surprised Baton Rouge with power outages that lasted 10 days or more in many areas.

Public Service Commissioner Jimmy Field, who represents the Baton Rouge area, says he's confident power companies are ready for Isaac, expected to strike as a hurricane.

State government offices to close in 22 parishes

State government offices across 22 parishes will shut down Tuesday and Wednesday because of Tropical Storm Isaac, expected to grow into a hurricane.

Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater on Monday announced the closures, which cover parishes in the tropical storm warning, hurricane watch and hurricane warning areas.

Southern University campuses shut down for Isaac

The Southern University System is shutting down campuses in advance of the storm.

The system announced that Southern University-New Orleans has canceled all remaining classes Monday and will remain shuttered through Wednesday. SUNO is evacuating 90 students living in residential facilities to the system's Baton Rouge campus.

Meanwhile, the Baton Rouge campus won't hold classes Tuesday and Wednesday, the system announced.

Parts of Tangipahoa asked to evacuate

Tangipahoa Parish officials are asking residents living south of Louisiana Highway 22 to voluntarily evacuate to higher ground because of Tropical Storm Isaac.

Parish President Gordon Burgess said the area is in south Tangipahoa, including the Manchac community where Lake Maurepas empties into Lake Pontchartrain.
